FIN PEDAL DRIVE
Alternating pedal movement drives the fins beneath your kayak. Forward-only propulsion, with no spinning propeller to wrap vegetation around.

PROPELLER PEDAL DRIVE
Pedal in a continuous circle, like a bicycle, to turn the propeller below the hull. Choose this setup for clearer, deeper water and steady cruising.
Maintain suitable water depth and follow drive-use instructions. Neither drive is intended to strike the bottom or obstacles. Optional upgrades are additional to the fin-package price.
A FAMILIAR MOTION
A bicycle pedal kayak uses circular foot movement to turn a propeller beneath the hull. On a PORTL propeller setup, you pedal much as you would ride a bike, while the rudder steering system controls direction.
A fin pedal kayak works differently: alternating pedal movement powers fins rather than a spinning propeller. Both free your hands from continuous paddling, but steering and safe control still need your attention.

MORE TIME WITH YOUR LINE IN THE WATER
Keep moving with your legs while handling your rod, subject to the steering and control your conditions require.
Reduce the need to alternate constantly between your fishing rod and paddle when pedalling is suitable.
Choose fin movement for weedy margins or circular propeller pedalling for clearer, deeper stretches.
Tandem models include two chairs and two pedal drives, so each angler has their own pedal position.
GO FURTHER. PACK SMALLER.
A full-size kayak on the water. Separate rigid hull sections for the journey there. Solo models divide into two sections; Tandems into three. Pack your hull modules, pedal drives and gear around your own vehicle and storage space.
Check the actual boot opening, cargo dimensions and section weights. Some setups need suitable roof racks. Fit depends on your vehicle and packing arrangement.

A pedal kayak uses your feet and legs to power a drive below the hull, reducing reliance on continuous paddling. PORTL offers fin and bicycle-style propeller pedal drives across Solo and Tandem modular models.
Your pedal movement powers either fins or a propeller beneath the kayak. PORTL’s rudder steering system controls direction. You still need to pay attention to steering, obstacles, water depth and changing conditions.
It is a pedal kayak with a circular pedalling motion similar to riding a bicycle. On the PORTL propeller drive, that movement turns a propeller beneath the hull. A fin drive uses an alternating push movement instead.
Choose for your water. Fin drives are forward-only and have no spinning propeller, making them useful around shallow, weedy edges with adequate clearance. Propeller drives suit clearer, deeper water; weeds can wrap around the propeller.
Only with sufficient clearance for both the hull and drive. Fin propulsion can suit shallow margins, but shallow-water suitability does not mean you can pedal across the bottom or through obstacles. Follow the drive-use instructions.
You can choose fin or propeller propulsion for your model and purchase additional compatible drives separately. Confirm the mounting and compatibility for your PORTL kayak before changing systems.
Optional electric motors and battery bundles are available separately. Confirm the mounting, electrical requirements and compatibility for your chosen kayak with PORTL before installation.
Yes. PORTL Tandem pedal packages include two chairs and two selected pedal drives. Solo packages include one chair and one selected pedal drive. The propeller upgrade is $250 for both Tandem drives, or $150 for Solo.

A pedal kayak uses your legs to provide propulsion, leaving your hands available for other tasks between steering adjustments. For fishing, that can change how you manage rods, tackle and movement around a spot. The right choice still depends on the complete kayak, your intended conditions and the equipment you carry. Compare seating, hull layout, pedal motion, storage and transport together. PORTL offers four modular pedal fishing kayaks across the Passage and Odyssey families, in Solo and Tandem configurations.
A fin pedal drive uses an alternating motion to move fins below the hull. Rather than turning pedals through full circles, you push the pedals back and forth. A fin system is often considered around light weed because it has no spinning propeller for vegetation to wrap around. The unit still needs clearance beneath the kayak. Dense growth, submerged objects and bottom contact can interfere with it, so follow the specific operating, launching, retrieval and stowing instructions for the drive.
A propeller pedal drive turns a propeller through a bicycle-style pedalling motion. If you are searching for a bicycle pedal kayak, this is the type of movement to compare. Consider it around your preferred cadence and the clearer water you expect to use. Weed and line can wrap around a rotating propeller, and the lower unit needs enough depth to operate. Confirm the PORTL drive's features and instructions rather than assuming reverse, kick-up protection or a particular minimum operating depth.
Start with the places you normally fish and the movement you find comfortable. Think about vegetation, launch depth, debris and how often you will need to remove or stow the drive. Fin and propeller systems have different mechanisms and care requirements; neither is a universal choice for every outing. Ask about the exact drive supplied with your chosen kayak and compare its maintenance routine. The fin-versus-propeller buyer's guide below the FAQs provides a focused comparison before you select your package.
The slimmer Passage and broader Odyssey both offer fin or propeller pedal choices. Their hull and storage layouts provide another part of the decision. Odyssey includes 40 L bow storage and under-seat fish storage, with one cabin in Solo and two in Tandem. Passage offers a different deck arrangement in the slimmer model family. Compare where your equipment will sit, how you will reach it and the PORTL specifications for the model. Choose your platform as well as your preferred pedal movement.
A PORTL Solo pedal kayak package includes one standard chair and one selected pedal drive. A Tandem includes two standard chairs and two selected drives, so plan the fishing positions and equipment around both people. Choose the fin or propeller package when configuring the kayak. An extra complete pedal-drive unit is a separate accessory purchase. A matching Solo-to-Tandem expansion pack can add the middle section, standard chair and selected drive later, while keeping the existing Passage or Odyssey model family.
A pedal setup still benefits from a considered paddle and backup plan. Understand steering, stopping, drive retrieval and the route back to the launch before heading out. PORTL electric motors are optional additions, and the selected pedal drives remain included in the package. The builder supports one optional motor for Solo and up to two for Tandem, with batteries selected separately. Confirm the mounting, controls, battery requirements and complete electrical arrangement for the configuration you choose; do not assume a motor price includes every component.
PORTL Solo hulls separate into two rigid sections and Tandems into three. Alongside those sections, allow room for chairs, removable drives, paddle, fishing gear and any motor or battery. Check each lift and how you will move equipment between the vehicle and launch. Shorter hull sections change the packing arrangement but do not establish a fit in every car. Use the car-fit tool to compare dimensions and assumptions, then confirm your actual loading path and final PORTL specifications.
Pedal drives add moving components to your ownership routine. Ask for the supplied cleaning, inspection, lubrication and storage guidance for your exact system. Inspect the mounting and locking points, rudder controls and moving parts as directed. Store the kayak sections with suitable support, and protect fittings and joining surfaces while moving them. Motors and batteries have separate care requirements. Plan enough space to keep the complete kit organised between trips, rather than comparing only the assembled kayak's length or the hull sections alone.
When comparing pedal kayaks for sale in Australia, check the number of seats and drives included, the selected propulsion option and any upgrades. PORTL's product cards show current fin package starting prices, with drive choices available when you configure the kayak. Add delivery and separately selected equipment to your comparison. A swivel chair replaces its standard chair, while canopies and other accessories are optional. Request an itemised quote if you are comparing several configurations, so every included component and additional cost is clear.
Begin with your usual crew, waterway and equipment list, then choose the hull layout and pedal motion that fit those plans. Explore Passage Solo or Tandem for the slimmer range, or Odyssey Solo or Tandem for the broader platform and dedicated fish storage. Review the buyer's guides for details on drives, transport and optional electric setups.
