A DIFFERENT WAY TO PACK

Your car shouldn’t limit your adventure.

A full-size kayak. In separate sections.

Fishing comes first. The journey there matters too. PORTL’s sectional hull separates for storage and transport, then connects for your next outing.

Car fit depends on your vehicle, seating position and everything you pack. Compare hull-section dimensions, openings and weight before choosing. Final sample measurements and physical fit tests are still to come.

What is a modular fishing kayak?

A modular fishing kayak is a rigid kayak made from separate hull sections that connect for use on the water. PORTL Solo kayaks have two hull sections and Tandem kayaks have three. Separating the hull changes how you transport and store it; the assembled kayak is still a full-length rigid vessel.

Will a PORTL modular kayak fit inside my car?

It depends on the model, the dimensions of each section and your vehicle opening and cargo space. Check the narrowest opening, usable width, length with seats folded, and height. Compare the actual loading route as well as the final storage space. Use the car fit checker as a planning aid, then confirm measurements before purchase.

What is the difference between a fin pedal drive and a propeller pedal drive?

A fin drive moves fins beneath the hull; a propeller drive turns a propeller using bicycle-style pedalling. Fin drives are often preferred around light weed, while propeller drives suit clearer, deeper water. Both need adequate operating clearance. Avoid dense weed and bottom contact. Compare fin and propeller pedal drives.

Is a battery included with the electric motor?

The battery is selected separately. Step two offers an optional 12V 100Ah lithium battery and battery box bundle at A$399 including GST, with delivery additional. Selecting a motor does not automatically add a battery. Solo allows one bundle and Tandem allows up to two in the builder.

Will any 12V or 24V lithium battery work with the motor?

Do not choose a battery on voltage or capacity alone. PORTL must confirm the motor voltage, maximum current draw, battery BMS discharge limits, connectors, cabling, fuse protection and charger compatibility for the supplied system. The listed 12V 100Ah bundle is not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Can I collect a kayak from the Gold Coast warehouse?

Contact PORTL to confirm collection availability, timing and loading arrangements before visiting. The listed warehouse address is 56 Export Drive, Molendinar QLD 4214. Collection, demonstrations and on-site stock should not be assumed without confirmation. Plan your visit.

Can I upgrade my Solo to a Tandem later?

Yes. Add the matching PORTL Solo-to-Tandem Expansion Pack. Each pack includes the middle hull section, one standard chair and your choice of one fin or propeller pedal drive. Choose the Passage expansion pack for Passage Solo or the Odyssey expansion pack for Odyssey Solo. Prices include GST; delivery is additional.

What makes a good fishing kayak in Australia?

The best fishing kayak for you is the one that suits your fishing, your gear and the journey to the water. Start with where you launch, whether you fish alone or with someone else, and how much equipment you carry. Then compare seating, propulsion, storage and the complete package. A good choice should work for your regular outings, rather than simply offer the longest list of features.

Start with Solo or Tandem

A Solo fishing kayak gives you your own seating position and setup. A Tandem brings two people into one craft, with room to plan both fishing positions. PORTL Solo packages include one standard chair and one selected pedal drive; Tandems include two chairs and two selected drives. Compare the Passage Solo and Passage Tandem around who normally joins you. A matching expansion pack also lets you convert a PORTL Solo to Tandem later.

Choose a platform for your fishing

Passage is the slimmer, versatile PORTL range. Odyssey offers a broader platform, 40 L bow storage and dedicated under-seat fish storage: one cabin in Solo and two in Tandem. Explore Odyssey Solo for your own space, or Odyssey Tandem for shared trips. Think about where tackle, rods and your catch will sit, and check model suitability and total load for your intended conditions.

Compare pedal drives and electric options

A pedal fishing kayak lets your legs provide propulsion while your hands manage other tasks. Fin pedals use an alternating push-pull motion; propeller pedals use bicycle-style circular pedalling. Compare clearance, weed and care requirements in our fin versus propeller guide. PORTL also offers optional electric motors, with batteries selected separately. Your selected pedal drives remain included when adding motors. Consider the whole setup, including mounting, controls, charging and a suitable paddle.

Make transport part of the decision

A modular fishing kayak separates into rigid hull sections for transport and storage. PORTL Solo models have two sections; Tandems have three. Measure the boot opening, usable cargo space and loading path, then allow room for chairs, drives and fishing gear. Our Will it fit in my car? tool helps compare dimensions and assumptions. Confirm final PORTL specifications and your actual loading arrangement before relying on a fit.

Look at the complete package

When comparing fishing kayaks in Australia, include the chosen drive, seating, accessories and delivery in your budget. A swivel chair replaces a standard chair; canopies, extra drives, motors and battery bundles are optional. Check package inclusions, warranty terms, support and current pre-order timing. Practical extras should solve a need, whether that is shade, rod storage or moving the kayak to the launch.

Think through your usual launch

Before comparing features, picture a complete fishing day. Where will you unload, how far will you carry the equipment, and what will the launch surface be like? Consider the waterway guidance for the specific kayak and your experience, rather than assuming every fishing kayak suits every Australian location. A sheltered estuary outing and a more exposed trip involve different planning. Ask about the model, your expected load and the conditions you intend to use it in.

Plan your deck before adding accessories

A useful fishing setup keeps the equipment you need within reach without crowding the seating or controls. Think about rod positions, tackle storage and how you will land and handle a catch. Start with the essentials, then add accessories around a real need. A rod holder, transducer mount or bait board has a different purpose from a canopy or swivel chair. Check compatibility and positioning for your chosen hull and seating layout before building a long accessory list.

Compare storage with your actual kit

Storage means more than the size of a compartment. Check which items you want accessible during a session and which can stay packed until you return. Odyssey's bow storage and under-seat fish cabins provide specific spaces to plan around, while Passage offers a different deck arrangement. Allow for the equipment you bring, including removable drives and any battery. Confirm the dimensions and intended use of each compartment rather than assuming every bag, tackle box or fish will fit.

Look beyond the headline price

Two fishing kayaks with similar advertised prices can come with different equipment. Compare the selected drive, number of chairs, paddle inclusions and optional upgrades on the same basis. Then add delivery and any accessories you actually need. PORTL product prices update with the current catalog, while an itemised quote helps confirm your final configuration. Keep optional motor and battery costs separate when comparing a pedal package, and ask which installation components your electric setup requires.

Choose a routine you can maintain

Your ownership routine continues after the fishing is finished. Plan space to clean and dry equipment as directed, inspect the joining hardware and store the separate hull sections with appropriate support. Pedal drives, motors and batteries have their own care and storage requirements. Ask about replacement parts, written warranty terms and how to obtain help in Australia. Clear support and realistic maintenance expectations are useful parts of a buying decision, alongside the features you see in a product photo.

Build a shortlist you can explain

A useful shortlist has a reason behind every choice: the seating suits your usual crew, the drive suits your preferred movement, the storage suits your gear and the packed kit suits your vehicle. Use the buying guides to check those decisions, then compare the four PORTL models together. If something remains uncertain, bring the question to James before ordering. The aim is a fishing kayak setup that makes sense for your own outings, with its inclusions and practical requirements understood.
